This photo is a self portrait that is just about exactly 10 years old.  My girlfriend shutters to think that I used to look like this--even worse for her is the reality that at any time I could start looking like this again--only older. After scanning this 4x5 negative a few minutes ago, I almost took out the dark circle under my eye.   I did look better, but decided that it wouldn't be very honest.  I think that one should not make self portraits if they feel they need to idealize them to make them presentable.
