Butte always gets a bad rap. When I first moved to Montana someone told me that one of the most beautiful sites in the state was Butte in the rear-view mirror. I disagree. Sure, it has its problems, arsenic in the soil and the Berkeley Pit, but it has a lot of charm. The historic downtown area is beautiful and far less affected by modern development than more hip towns like Missoula. During the height of the copper mining, Butte was the largest city in the USA West of Chicago. Now it looks like a bit of a relic with its Victorian buildings and derelict mining structures. But with its beautiful scenery and industrious history, to me Butte seems to be a town ripe for a renaissance.
