I had never built and Inukshuk before, but I had seen them all along the
Dempster Highway in the North West Territories of Canada. They are stone markers and
symbols of good will used by the Inuit who live in the Arctic regions of North America.
One time I was driving across the Great Divide on RT 12 in Montana. The
terrain at the top of the pass, which is near the tree line, reminded me a lot the
landscape of the tundra. I gathered some rocks and made the best Inukshuk I could,
though I fear mine does not look very traditional. I suppose the main reason I did
it was out of nostalgia for the trip I took up North--a trip I hope to repeat someday
soon.
