Speaking of George Bush, I remember the last time he was president--Almost 10 years ago in January of 1991, it was the night of the countdown to the Gulf War.  A deadline had been set for Iraq to leave Kuwait by a certain time, or else bombing could commence at any moment.  I had just moved 2500 miles away from my family to Missoula, MT a couple of months before and was alone in my apartment that night.  Feeling anxious and isolated, I waited for news, watching television. As the night went I felt increasingly restless and decided to be around people and see the news first hand as it was happening locally.

There was a big protest on the courthouse lawn.  A demonstration for peace.   I went there with my camera.  Although it was only about 10 degrees F. hundreds of people were there singing and dancing.  A huge peace sign had been carved into the snow, and there were several drum circles happening at once.  When the clock ticked down to the deadline, (I think it was at midnight local time, or maybe 1 am) everyone fell silent and prayed for peace.  The news came that Iraq had not withdrawn, but the bombs were not yet falling.  The protest went on, When I ran out of film and got tired I went home to bed.  The next day I heard that the war had started.
