Back in 1990 I started working for the Association for Retarded Citizens. I worked in a sheltered day center and drove the van transporting clients to and from the day center to their homes. Vincent was the first person I worked with to whom I felt a real connection. He was also the first person with a disability whose portrait I took. I really enjoyed working with Vincent and knowing him meant a lot to me. I knew that I was leaving this job soon to move out of state. So one day I brought my camera with me on my van route. Vincent was the last person I was dropping off that day. He was living in the state psychiatric hospital in the medical wing because of his severe health problems. I asked Vincent if I could take his picture, and he seemed really happy to pose for me. I took this picture right before I dropped him off. Knowing him and working at ARC were such positive experiences that I worked in the field of Developmental Disabilities for the next five years. November 29, 2000 |
